Scots leather firm teams up with Chinese counterpart Print E-mail
One of Scotland’s leading leather firms has teamed up with a Chinese company in order to expand their share of the growing car market.

Renfrewshire-based Bridge of Weir Leather, part of the Scottish Leather Group, has partnered with Zibo Polygrace Dahuanjiu Tannery Group, a manufacturer and exporter of upholstery leathers. The new firm will operate as Zibow Automotive, with an expected turnover of around £12 million by the fifth year of operations.

Hides will be tanned and dyed in Scotland before being exported to China for finishing.

Bridge of Weir Leather already supplies car giants Aston Martin, Volvo and Ford.

Hank Zhou, chairman of the new joint venture said: "We have already secured business from Swedish car manufacturer, Volvo, who will be the first client to work with us and we plan to target all other China based European, Japanese and US manufacturers as well as the fast growing local Chinese manufacturers".

Founded in 1905, Bridge of Weir Leather Company operates one of Europe's largest leather production facilities. The firm exports leather to over 30 countries worldwide. The company, which has won the Queen's Award for Export Achievement three times, employs 200 staff. All of its produce, made from about 8,000 cattle hides a week, is manufactured in Scotland.
