Where does someone starting out in business turn for help and advice? A great idea is just the beginning of the process, next are the major practical issues like financing, premises and resources. All of these are essential without even mentioning the paramount requirement of having a fierce personal commitment and self motivation to make your business happen.
Personal enterprise shows, like GERA’s (Glasgow East Regeneration Agency) recent event Let Your Business Flourish, held in Celtic Park, are a valuable way of investigating efficiently and within a day what it takes to get a new business off the ground. Each of the participating 27 agencies and companies there wanted to offer help to new businesses from their own expertise and a valuable pay off for each of them is raising their own profile in the process.
Not only was business banking represented, but there was representation from DSL Business Finance, Enterprise Mentoring and accountants Wylie and Bisset, each having a different offer to new and developing businesses. On the property front City Property and Clyde Gateway were happy to talk about the various premises available from an office suitable for a one man business to a factory floor. Research facilities, advice and support were covered by GERA, Business Gateway, Enterprising News, Health at Work and the Scottish Childminding Association. John Wheatley College was on hand too, to support and to identify gaps in skills and offer solutions. Procurement was covered with the Supplier Development Programme on hand to explain how to make sure your business is ready and able to pitch for public tenders.
An interesting and valuable addition included local businesses Kingfisher Systems (accredited Sage Business Partners), Hendron Associates an event management specialist and Storm IT Solutions a web and IT agency - all willing to share their experiences when establishing their businesses.
Writer and journalist Kenny Kemp in his seminar, talked about his work with some of the UK’s most successful entrepreneurs, Richard Branson and Barbara Cassani (Go Airlines) then, focusing on the local, Kenny interviewed Craig McAuley. Craig established his gas heating engineering company Hova only a year ago and within a month made more money than he had earned in the previous 12 and added he will never again work for anyone other than himself.
