The number of bodies delivering waste advice and support to small businesses needs to be urgently reviewed, according to the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) in Scotland.
The body is also demanding better recycling facilities for firms, describing the current set up as “a mess”.
The FSB is in general a supporter of the Scottish Government’s Zero Waste Plan, but it has highlighted that there are at least seven bodies delivering national business waste and environmental advice, on top of various regional and local projects and organisations.
While many of these bodies do perform useful functions, the FSB argues that the number of overlapping publicly-funded organisations, agencies and websites is confusing for the business community and, of course, inefficient.
Andy Willox, the federation’s Scottish Policy Convenor, said: “Scotland’s small businesses are committed to playing their part in developing a more sustainable Scotland. However, if we want to further improve the amount that small businesses recycle, we need to move toward a more coherent system.”
The FSB also reiterated their call for local authorities to improve systematically small businesses’ access to kerbside recycling facilities and centres.
Willox added: “Our members have seen improvements in domestic recycling facilities and are keen to play a similar role at work, but are frustrated by a lack of practical and affordable options.
“There are regular reports of businesses being targeted and fined for the disposal of recyclate in public recycling facilities. We’re talking about a small office with perhaps one or two people, disposing of a bin of paper and a handful of other types of non-hazardous waste. It’s wrong that these sort of firms can’t use municipal facilities.”
